Education & Empowerment of Tribal Children in Patamda Block of East Singhbhum, Jharkhand

Mission

The project has been devised with the stipulated aim for providing 150 children (Age group: 4years - 13 years) of Patamda Block of East Singhbhum of Jharkhand State with proper education at least up to 5th Standard.

Providing them with informal education that will drive out the feeling of alienation and deprivation and help them inculcate good values in life and integrate them into national mainstream.

Providing vocational training in candle making and bamboo crafts which will enable them to earn their livelihood with dignity.

Creating health awareness and make the children along with their families aware of environmental health, sanitation and hygiene.

Imparting knowledge of basic diagnostic procedures, preventive measures and simple remedies of various diseases locale to the area.

Program Components :

a) Education : Offering facilities for formal and non-formal education programs and imparting literacy and basic education for 150 tribal children in the Patamda block.

b) Health Awareness Program : Conducting two health checking and two health training camps in a year. Health awareness camps to be conducted for parents and children on ORS, simple remedies and hygiene. Also making them aware of the basic diagnostic procedures and preventive measures for diseases locale to the area.

c) Skill Training : Offering skill trainings in trades like Candle Making, and Bamboo Crafts. Two separate groups of 75 each will be imparted skill trainings in the above-mentioned trades to enhance their skills and earn their livelihood.

On 26th December, 2010 a health checkup camp was organized in the Gobarghushi village of Patmda ASSARA in which students of ASSARA along with their family were there. About 100 inhabitants from various villages underwent various tests on that day. In afternoon few health tips were given to the parents as well as the students about the prevention of malaria and skin diseases by the team doctors.

They celebrated Independence Day, Teachers Day, Gandhi Jayanti, Children’s Day and their Annual Function in which they participated with great zeal as a 10 -10 one day tournament was conducted by ASSARA and prizes were also given to the winners.

Various vocational training such as Candle Making, Coir Craft, Food Processing, Mushroom Cultivation, and Block Painting etc. were conducted in the month of November and December mainly. As a result of these trainings people who were trained have started independently pursuing the practice and some of them have started in the home only. Various products produced by the beneficiaries of ASSARA were displayed in Trade Fare 2010 stalls and that benefited many of the mothers financially.

In terms of education a Creative Learning Practices were Imparted through eminent professionals who volunteered during the process and a system of Moving Library was also organized. They inaugurated a school called as Soumein Memorial ASSARA School for tribal children of Orissa.
