Presently, Dr. Gupta is a Professor at the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad and Visiting Professor of Innovation Management in Emerging Markets, European Business School, Berlin. He holds the Executive Vice-Chair of National Innovation Foundation. He is the founder of the Honey Bee Network and Coordinator for SRISTI and Secretary, GIAN. His mission is the expansion of the global as well as the local space for grassroots innovators by ensuring them recognition, respect and reward.

He has taught several courses and has been the editor of the Honey Bee Newsletter for over twenty years. He has published extensively in national and international journals, books and magazines. He is a consultant to several national and international organisations. A twin centre for Grassroots innovation has been set up by him in collaboration with Tianjin University of Finance and Economics, China. Similar efforts are on with other developing countries.

He received the Padma Shri in 2004; was joint recipient of the Sciencein- Society Award instituted by The Indian Science Congress Association 2004; was adjudged as one of the fifty most influential people in the field of IPR in 2003, Managing Intellectual Property; received the Star of Asia Award, BusinessWeek 2001; received the Asian Innovation Award Gold from Far Eastern Economic Review 2000 for coordinating SRISTI and the Honey Bee Network; and received the Pew Conservation Scholar Award 1993-96, University of Michigan, USA.
